NOTES ON STUDIO POPPAGE

Every creation begins in a space of calm. A zone of silence, of attentiveness and clarity, where thought takes form.

Studio Poppage draws inspiration from this active void — a gentle tension between fullness and emptiness, a place of balance that gives the gesture its precision and the material its presence.

In Taoist philosophy, emptiness is never synonymous with absence. It is a place where everything flows — light, movement, and thought. A space of openness, where the gesture finds its balance and the form its meaning.

This idea of harmony between fullness and emptiness has shaped the project’s DNA — an identity built on precision and quiet balance.

This sensibility echoes the Korean art movement Dansaekhwa, which emerged in the 1970s. Through repetition of gesture, texture, and monochrome, artists such as Park Seo-Bo, Ha Chong-Hyun, and Chung Sang-Hwa explored the relationship between matter and time. Their painting becomes a silent form of meditation, where presence arises from emptiness.

For Charlotte Debauge & Quentin Chastagnet, formerly Bureau Chastagnet Debauge, designing the identity of Studio Poppage meant translating this subtle tension — reducing expression to what is strictly essential.

Allowing form to emerge from silence, and matter to enter into dialogue with space. Each pause opens a field for new perceptions.

The STUDIO ( ) POPPAGE logo consists solely of the brand’s name, set in capital letters. Designed with precision and restraint, it conveys a sense of harmony and stability. The parentheses at its centre do not close — they open a space. They embody the philosophy of active emptiness: a silent dialogue between fullness and void, where each reveals the beauty of the other.

The chosen shade,  a deep green expresses both balance and nature. It connects the brand to what is living, grounded, and essential. Discreet yet assured, this green conveys a sense of calm and anchoring, in perfect continuity with this vision.

Composed in a sober and dense typography, the logo stands out through its simplicity. It acts as a silent frame, guiding the gaze not toward itself but toward what it holds. Like a space of silence, it reveals the presence of what inhabits it.
